To run concurrently with Brahmotsavams to attract pilgrim crowd

  • 150 artisans from several states to take part
  • Range of products to include wooden, terracotta artefacts, Kalamkari paintings, handloom garments
  • 20 mega exhibitions conducted so far all over India against the target of 100

TIRUPATI: The Union Textiles Ministry will conduct a 10-day national-level handicrafts exhibition at Urban Haat (Hasthakalaramam) from Thursday.

`Gandhi Shilpa Bazaar,' the exhibition-cum-sale of handloom products and craftwork, is timed to run concurrently with the Tirumala Srivari Brahmotsavams, when there will be a ready market available in the form of pilgrims.

Around 150 recognised artisans from several states will set up stalls at the expo to sell a range of products including wooden pieces, terracotta statuettes, Kalamkari paintings and brassware and handloom garments among a range of products.

Assistant Director (Handlooms) I.H.P. Rao told mediapersons on Wednesday that the department had already conducted 20 such mega exhibitions across the country out of the intended 100.

Another significant feature of the plan was to hold 50 expos in association with the handicrafts wing of various states to benefit local craftsmen.

    Welfare measures

Explaining the welfare measures taken up for artisans, Mr. Rao spoke on the `Janasri Bima Yojana' where the artisans would get an insurance coverage for life and accident benefit for a premium of Rs. 200, of which Rs. 160 would be borne by the Government. He also appealed to the craftsmen to avail the Credit Guarantee Transaction Scheme (CGTS) for securing loans.

Srikalahasti in Chittoor district, which is home to Kalamkari paintings, has been selected under the cluster development scheme aimed at developing skills and providing infrastructure in artisan localities, he added. Lepakshi manager (Tirumala) Venkateswara Rao and administrative officer of Urban Haat A. Mahidhar were present.
