Ragging in colleges

I am an engineering graduate and I have faced my share of ragging as student. But ragging was never as bad then as it is now. To put an end to ragging in colleges, one should bring about a change in the mindset of students, not just instil the fear of punishment. It is important to understand why a first year student, a victim of ragging, goes on to become a terror in his second year. For any constructive measure to be evolved, colleges must take students into confidence. Instead of forming anti-ragging squads, whose members spy on students who rag newcomers, it is important to discuss the issue with students. The fear of punishment may deter ragging on campus but not outside. Deal with the cause, not the effect.
