Kolkata: A day after Congress president Sonia Gandhi called Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee to thank her for her support in the recently held by-elections, veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu described their alliance as "one without principles." "The Trinamool tied up with a party [the Congress] which they had once described as the `B' team of the CPI(M)," Mr. Basu said on Wednesday. On the alliance, he asked: "Does it have any policy or programme?" Both the Congress and the Trinamool appear satisfied with the results of the by-polls, in which they were able to retain the seats held by them. They are looking at the possibility of extending the alliance to future elections. Left leaders pointed out that despite the two parties working together, the Left Front was successful in holding on to its seats. The vote share of the Left had increased in all the three Lok Sabha constituencies where polling was held, they said.
