World Alzheimer's Day to be observed today

Bangalore: One hundred years after Dr. Alois Alzheimer first identified the disease later named after him and described its symptoms, World Alzheimer's Day will be marked around the world on Thursday. The local chapter of Alzheimer's and Related Disorders Society of India (ARDSI) has organised an awareness procession, which will be flagged off by Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy.

Ex-Railway official sentenced to jail

BANGALORE: The 32nd Additional City Civil and Sessions Judge, A.L. Pujar, has sentenced a former Southern Railway official to two years' simple imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000 on finding him guilty of accepting a bribe of Rs. 1,000. Abdul Nazir, working as an Inspector of Works at Ashokapuram in Mysore, accepted the money from Krishna Nanjudachari, a khalasi working under him, to influence the chairman and members of the housing committee to allot him a house in the railway quarters. — Staff Reporter

Protest planned against `neglect of Tumkur'

TUMKUR: Senior Congress leader and former Minister T.B. Jayachandra on Wednesday held Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Minister for Energy and Public Works H.D. Revanna responsible "for neglecting Tumkur district."

Addressing presspersons, Mr. Jayachandra said the district was entitled to use 31 tmcft of water every year from the Tumkur Hemavathy canal. But, hardly, 6 tmcft of water had flowed into the district. He said his party would take the issue before the people by organising agitations at the hobli level. — Staff Correspondent

Bomb hoax at college

TUMKUR: Vidyavahini College Complex in Sri Krishna Nagar here was thoroughly searched for more than three hours on Wednesday following a call that a bomb had been placed in the complex.

College sources said students and teachers were having lunch when the attender received a call saying that a bomb had been placed in the complex. He alerted the principal, who called the police. Superintendent of Police P. Harisekharan rushed to the spot with his men. They searched the place with the help of sniffer dogs for over three hours before sounding the all clear. — Staff Correspondent

Man kills son, shoots himself dead

Sirsi: A man allegedly killed his son and then shot himself dead with a gun after a quarrel over money for buying alcohol at Kodkli village near here on Tuesday. Narasimha Naik (55) of Kondli in Amminalli village near here insisted that his son pay for his liquor and when Srinath N. Naik (23) refused to yield, the former killed him. He then shot himself dead, according to reports reaching here. Additional Superintendent of Police Tavaragi and Deputy Superintendent of Police Bhasha Sab, Sirsi, visited the place. A case has been registered. — Correspondent

World Heart Day

MYSORE: World Heart Day will be observed here on Sunday by the Cardiological Society of India, Mysore chapter. This year's theme is "How young is your heart". A health walk will be held to increase public awareness on heart diseases and prevention of heart attack. Deputy Commissioner Selvakumar will inaugurate the health walk. The CSI and Vikram Hospital and Heart Care will conduct a free cardiology camp for those suffering from heart diseases and hypertension on September 23 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. — Special Correspondent

Rasta roko

GULBARGA: The Dalit Vimochana Sena on Wednesday held a rasta roko on the main road in front of the administrative office of the Gulbarga City Corporation demanding regular payment of monthly salary to contract labourers in the Drinking Water and the Under Ground Drainage works in the city. Leaders of the sena and contract labourers of the corporation squatted on the road disrupting movement of the traffic for nearly an hour. In their memorandum submitted to the corporation officials, they said that the pump operators in the corporation were not paid salary for the past nine months and the workers involved in the UGD and other works were not paid salary for the past five months. — Special Correspondent

Dharam Singh, Kharge to meet Sonia Gandhi

NEW DELHI: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the State Legislative Assembly Dharam Singh are likely to call on Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday and apprise her of the latest political developments in the State in the wake of controversy over allegations of bribery made against Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Minister for Forests and Environment C. Chennigappa.

The two leaders, who arrived here from Bangalore on Wednesday, called on CWC member in-charge of Karnataka affairs A.K. Anthony and political secretary to Ms. Gandhi Ahmed Patel. — Special Correspondent

Kumaraswamy to lay foundation stone

Belgaum: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy is likely to lay the foundation stone for the Kalasa-Banduri Nala diversion scheme in Khanapur taluk on September 22. The scheme has been proposed to augment drinking water supply and irrigation requirements to Hubli-Dharwad, Gadag and Belgaum districts. According to a press release here on Wednesday, Mr. Kumaraswamy will arrive at Khanapur at 11 a.m. and participate in a function "at a place decided by the Deputy Commissioner" falling in Kankumbi of Khanapur taluk. Sources said the Chief Minister may not lay foundation for construction of the dam but for canal for technical reasons. — Staff Correspondent

Dalit Christians threaten fast

Bangalore: The National Council of Dalit Christians (NCDC), which met in Bangalore, has resolved to launch a relay hunger strike in New Delhi during the winter session of Parliament in pursuit of its demand for inclusion of the community in the Scheduled Caste (SC) list. NCDC national convener George V.J. and chairman M. Mary John told presspersons on Wednesday that all the UPA partners had committed themselves to addressing the issue in their manifestoes. — Special Correspondent

No mention of Governor's address

BANGALORE: The State Legislative Council is preparing for the five-day special session of the State legislature in Belgaum from September 25. In the provisional programme of the Council issued to the press, there was no mention of Governor T.N. Chaturvedi's address to the session or legislators. Legislative Council Secretary K. Jayashankaramurthy told presspersons on Wednesday that the Council would start its session at 12.30 p.m. on Monday at a specially arranged hall in the Anatomy Department Quadrangle of the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Belgaum. — Special Correspondent

Invitation to Governor

Hirekerur (Haveri District): Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has said that he will formally invite Governor T.N. Chaturvedi soon to address the joint session of legislature to be held in Belgaum later this month. Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, the Chief Minister said he had only discussed the issue of addressing the joint session with the Governor informally. "I will meet him and invite him formally. It is left to the Governor to decide on whether to address the joint session or not," he said. — Staff Correspondent

No Janata Darshan

Bangalore: The Janata Darshan of Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy scheduled for September 23 has been cancelled following his tour in Haveri, Belgaum, Bijapur and Shimoga districts. — Staff Reporter

`Doctors will be recruited soon'

Sirsi: Small-scale Industry and district in-charge Minister Shivanand Naik has said that despite the increase in salary of doctors they are not willing to serve in government hospitals in the State and hence the shortage of doctors in Uttara Kannada also. Presiding over a Karnataka Development Programme meeting at the Taluk Panchayat Hall here on Wednesday, he said steps would be taken to recruit doctors on contract to mitigate the problem. His attention was drawn by the zilla and taluk panchayat members towards bad roads, irregularities in the distribution of LPG, the need for a women's college, pre-degree college and the like. The Minister promised that road and drainage works would be taken up under a package system. Zilla panchayat member Bheemanna Naik, MLA Vivekananda Vaidya, Assistant Commissioner H.S. Ramakrishna, tahsildar M.V. Kallurmath, taluk panchayat chief executive officer R.D. Naik and zilla and taluk panchayat members were present. — Correspondent

`Inquiry is on'

SIRSI: Small-scale Industry and district in-charge Minister Shivanand Naik said that an inquiry into the alleged misappropriation of funds under the Sampurna Nairmalya Scheme and Ganga Kalyan Scheme in Uttara Kannada district was going on and action would be taken after the report was submitted. Speaking to presspersons here on Wednesday, he said the Deputy Commissioner would be asked to preside over the Sirsi Municipal Council meeting. He said the Forests Department officials were instructed to keep vigil on alleged looting of forest wealth in the district. The reported irregularities in the selection of anganwadi workers would be checked, he said. Officials who failed to attend the Karnataka Development Programme meeting and other official meetings would be subjected to disciplinary action, he said. Sirsi MLA Vivekananda Vaidya was present. — Correspondent

Ship to be removed

PANAJI: The Goa Government received a nod from the Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court on Wednesday to remove the River Princess, a dilapidated vessel, which is standing off the Sinquerim beach for over five years. Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane told The Hindu on Wednesday that this was in response to an affidavit filed by the Government in the court seeking permission to go ahead with its plan to finalise bids to "tow away the dilapidated vessel mv River Princess in high sea and dismantle it there to avert any damage to the tourist coast of north Goa." — Special Correspondent
