SINGAPORE: Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe was on Wednesday elected president of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) within Japan's ruling coalition. He is now poised to become the next Prime Minister by succeeding Junichiro Koizumi on September 26. Mr. Koizumi has held both posts for over five and a half years. The traditions of coalition politics and the LDP's dominant position ensure that the Liberal Democrat leader is also the Prime Minister. At 51, Mr. Abe is not only the youngest to become the LDP president but also the first leader, born after the Second World War, to be in line for the post of Prime Minister. Though a close political lieutenant of Mr. Koizumi, he has indicated that his priorities in Government would be aimed at going the extra mile along the road of economic reforms at home and closer ties with the U.S. that his mentor had almost institutionalised. With Foreign Minister Taro Aso seen to be ideologically close to Mr. Abe, diplomats noted that the latter will be closely watched by China and the two Koreas for his "hawkish" policies towards them. Mr. Abe has also pledged to work for an amendment of the pacifist Constitution that was imposed by the U.S. after the Second World War.
