World Bank interested in cleaning Cooum

T. Ramakrishnan

CHENNAI: The World Bank has shown interest in funding a project for cleaning the Cooum, Public Works Minister Durai Murugan has said.

The Minister told The Hindu that a team of the multilateral agency's officials would hold discussions with him and other officials on Friday. "It is my desire that the river becomes navigable again," he said. The project could be carried out on a turnkey basis.

He said a senior official of the Bank had spoken to him.The discussion would also focus on the Irrigated Agriculture Modernisation and Water Resources Management project, a follow-up to the Water Resources Consolidation Project completed two years ago. [It had been proposed to implement the project with the participation of line departments, using the experience gained from the pilot scheme in the Hanumannathi sub-basin of the Tamiraparani basin.]
