Puducherry: Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) secretary S. Balasubramanian has said that the decision to grant autonomy to the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research appeared to be a direct sequel to the intention of the Central Government to ultimately privatise the hospital. This would prove detrimental to poor patients and the student community, he said. Mr. Balasubramanian said poor patients had been receiving treatment free of cost in the institution from the day of its inception. Students intending to do different medical courses were also securing admissions easily. These facilities would suffer a setback once JIPMER became autonomous. Hence, the Central Cabinet decision taken on September 7 should be rejected once and for all, he said. He also announced that volunteers of different wings of his party would stage a demonstration at the Pattanikadai junction here on Thursday to register their strong protest against the decision of the Congress headed United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre to make the an autonomous body.
