Call off strike, says AICC general secretary

Special Correspondent

"Patients bearing the brunt of the protest"

PUDUCHERRY: All India Congress Committee general secretary V. Narayanasamy said here on Tuesday that he had asked a delegation of the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research Staff Struggle Committee, now spearheading the indefinite strike, to call off their protest in the larger interests of patient care and normal working of the hospital.

Mr. Narayanasamy said he had informed the delegation at a meeting earlier in the day that he would arrange for the employees to meet the Prime Minister and the Union Health Minister so that they could clarify apprehensions about the future of JIPMER, the nature of health care services and about other aspects of the working conditions of the staff.

Autonomy was not going to happen immediately as legislation in the Parliament had to still be adopted and would be done after views and opinions of all stakeholders were accommodated.

Patients were bearing the brunt of the strike and hence the employees should call off the strike and resume duty immediately, he said. He hoped his appeal would elicit a positive response from the staff.
