Gang members carried sharp weapons

CHENNAI
: In a daring robbery, a three-member masked gang barged into a house on Third North Street Bethel Nagar Injambakkam in Neelankarai police station limits and made away with valuables.
Police said the gang entered the house in the early hours of Monday, and made the occupants part with jewels and cash. Though the woman of the house pleaded that she was poor and there was nothing much to part with, her plea went in vain.
The woman, Packiam (45), was forced to hand over Rs 3,000 cash and jewellery weighing 2.5 sovereigns.
Not satisfied, the gang demanded more, but Packiam told them she did not have anything else. Her neighbour Muthulakshmi and her husband Jayabal attempted to come to the aid of Packiam, but were told to keep away by the gangsters.
They fled from the scene under the cover of darkness.
Police said the gang members, all in their twenties, had covered their faces and carried sharp weapons.
They spoke in Tamil and repeatedly warned Packiam not to inform the police.
A police officer said the gang had told the victim that it wanted the money for getting illegally distilled arrack, whose sale had been curbed by the police in the past few months.
Neelankarai police have registered a case of robbery and extortion, and are investigating.
