Transco engineer suspended

NALGONDA: Amid a galore of complaints from ryots about the alleged inordinate delay in repairing transformers, Transco has placed the Divisional Engineer (Transformers) V. Gangaram under suspension on Wednesday. Superintending Engineer N. Sattaiah told The Hindu hat he had served the suspension order sent by the central office at Hyderabad on the official. However, he could not cite any reason for the action. "At this point of time, we don't know the reason for his suspension. The reasons would be given afterwards," he maintained.-Staff Reporter

CPI (M) demands gas agency for Sangareddy

Sangareddy: CPI (M) town committee has launched a signature campaign here on Wednesday demanding a second gas agency for the town to mitigate the ongoing shortage of gas cylinders. The campaign was launched by advocate Ch. Narsingaraj at the LPG Godown on the Rajampet road. Addressing the gathering, Narsingaraj pointed out that the only gas agency was not able to meet the requirment of the town which has 28,000 connections. He said that the regulations clearly mention that number of connections per gas agency should not cross 12,000. -Staff Reporter

JAC stages dharna against UPA policies

ADILABAD: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of employees, teachers and workers on Wednesday staged a demonstration in front of the district Collectorate protesting against the "anti- worker" policies of the UPA Government at the Centre. CPI stages protest against bad roads

KURNOOL: CPI leaders took out a rally on the road leading to Johrapuram which was in a bad shape in the city on Wednesday. Party city secretary K. Teachers stage dharna

CHITTOOR: Employees and teachers' associations staged a dharna before the Collector's office on Wednesday in protest against the indifferent attitude of the State and Central Governments in solving their problems. CHITTOOR: The Zilla Parishad general body meeting scheduled to be held on Wednesday for the constitution of standing committees has been postponed due to lack of quorum, according to Veerabhadraiah, ZP Chief Executive Officer. - Correspondent

DIG inspects traffic police station

KURNOOL: K.R.M. Kishore Kumar, DIG, inspected traffic police station here on Wednesday. Later, he interacted with traffic personnel and asked them to concentrate on the movement of vehicles in the city. 3 houses burgled

ADONI: Three houses were burgled in Adoni town on Tuesday night and valuables worth Rs. 15 lakhs were taken away. They took away jewellery worth Rs. 13 lakhs from one house. Inspector Konda Reddy visited the houses and formed teams to investigate the cases. - Staff Reporter

Award for SSI

HYDERABAD: Chairman of Tulasi Group Tulasi Rama Chandra Prabhu has been selected for the national award for quality products in Small Scale Sector. A press release from the company said the award would be presented to Mr. Prabhu on October 7. Tulasi Group is the first small scale industry in the State to bag the award. - Special Correspondent

BUMS test postponed

VIJAYAWADA: Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences Registrar P. Jayakar on Wednesday said the entrance test for BUMS to be held at Osmania Medical College on September 23 was postponed to September 28. He said the centre and time would be the same as notified earlier. Candidates are instructed to obtain hall tickets from Nizamia Tibbi College at Hyderabad on September 26 and 27. - Staff Reporter

Ryot commits suicide

Kakinada: Ulavakayala Arjanna (30) an onion farmer reportedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide at his house in Chebrolu village under Gollaprolu police station limits on Wednesday. Crop loss due to unfavourable seasonal conditions is understood to have led him to the extreme step. - Correspondent

Three siblings end lives

Srikakulam: Two teenaged girls Chikati Sujatha (18) and her sister Dhanalakshmi (15) and their brother Ramesh (10) of Tarlagaduru village near Palasa, reportedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide on Tuesday. Abject poverty was the apparent reason. The parents of the three had died some years ago and their grandmother had died six months ago. - Special Correspondent

Two students drowned

NIZAMABAD: Two students of the Zilla Parishad High School at Utnoor village of Gandhari mandal were drowned in a percolation tank on the village outskirts on Wednesday. Mothe Rajesh (13) and Beram Sailoo (13) went for a swim with other friends after lunch and drowned. Farmers working in the nearby fields rushed to the spot, but by then the two had died. - Staff Reporter

Panchayat secretaries removed

ADILABAD: Orders were issued on Wednesday to remove 91 panchayats secretaries in Adilabad district who were working on contract basis. They had been recruited as dependents of Government employees who had retired following medical invalidation. Meanwhile, 4,000 applications were received for recruitment for 43 contract panchayat secretaries. - Staff Reporter

Court order to PCB

HYDERABAD: A Division Bench on Wednesday granted four weeks' time to the Pollution Control Board (APPCB) and the Government to place before the court the scheme to deal with waste disposal from the urban areas. It was dealing with a petition wherein it was alleged that the municipal authorities at Bheemavaram had been dumping garbage in a nearby village. - Legal Correspondent

Farmer washed away

NALGONDA: A 23-year-old farmer Varsu Ravi was washed away in a stream at Raghunathapalem in Mattampally mandal on Wednesday. His brothers, who had just crossed the stream, tried in vain to rescue him. - Staff Reporter

Dies in wall collapse

ELURU: A 72-year-old woman Veerla Sattamma, a resident of Gollagudem in Tadepalligudem mandal of West Godavari district, was killed in a wall collapse on Wednesday. According to information, her thatched house was soaked in the incessant rain, leading to the wall collapse. - Staff Reporter

Linguist mourned

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy condoled the death of Devulapalli Madanmohan Rao (73), a linguist and Urdu writer, here on Wednesday. His death was a loss to Telugu, English and Urdu literary fields, Dr. Reddy said in a message. Rao is survived by wife and three sons, including D. Amar, Chairman, Andhra Pradesh Press Academy, and a daughter.
