Lagadapati's remarks spark off protest

Special Correspondent

TURNING VOCAL: Manda Krishna Madiga with his MRPS men shouting slogans in Hyderabad on Wednesday in protest against Lagadapati Rajagopal's alleged remarks.

HYDERABAD: Activists of the Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti (MRPS) led by Manda Krishna Madiga on Wednesday staged a demonstration near the Lakeview guesthouse protesting the alleged derogatory remarks by Vijayawada MP Lagadpati Rajagopal against Siddipet MP Sarve Satyanarayana.

A group of 50 MRPS activists went to the guesthouse where AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh was staying but were stopped by the police. Even before the MRPS workers arrived, followers of Mr. Rajagopal came to the venue and raised slogans in his favour.

When Mr. Satyanarayana came to meet Mr. Singh, Congress workers from Vijayawada raised full-throated slogans. The MRPS activists raised counter-slogans demanding apology from the Vijayawada MP. Mr. Manda Krishna, criticising Vijayawada protesters, including some Dalits, said that self-respect was more important.

Md. Ali Shabbir, Information Minister, and V. Hanumantha Rao, MP, tried to pacify the agitators and promised them that they would get an audience with Mr. Singh. Later, in a memorandum submitted to the AICC leader, Mr. Krishna said when the Government could arrest TDP legislator Karanam Balarama Krishnamurthy for allegedly using foul language against a woman Collector, it should apply the same rule to Mr. Rajagopal.
