Godavari close to danger mark

Staff Reporter

Officials relieved after let-up in rainfall

  • Flood level stable at temple town, receding in Peruru, Kaleshwaram
  • Families vacated from riverside areas rehabilitated in relief camps
  • Four tanks breached in Venkatapuram, Wajeedu mandals

KHAMMAM: The flood flow in Godavari is close to the danger mark of 53 feet at Bhadrachalam. The second warning was issued as it crossed 48 feet at 6 a.m. on Wednesday.

The official machinery heaved a sigh of relief with some let-up in the rainfall, but all precautions have been taken going by the flood manual, to reach out to the people in the low-lying areas anytime the need arises.

The flood level was stable at 51.5 feet near the temple town by 5 p.m. while it showed a receding trend at the upstream points of Peruru and Kaleswaram.

    Still in spate

The Taliperu and Sabari rivers are still in spate. Families vacated from the riverside colonies in Chintoor village have been rehabilitated in two relief centres. Two more relief centres have been opened in Vararamachandrapuram mandal.

The officials have focused mainly on Vararamachandrapuram, Chintoor and Kunavaram, which had borne the brunt of last month's floods.

Some 37 families have been shifted to safer places from Vaddigudem village and 32 families from Dharmatallagumpu.

Four panchayati raj tanks developed breaches in Venkatapuram and Wajeedu mandals.

Kunavaram mandal had the highest rainfall of 134 mm. Many villages in the agency areas remained cut off for the second day on Wednesday.

The Gundala-Yelland road was under water at different points.

A causeway in the route was damaged by the flash flood in Murredu stream. The Chintoor-Vararamachandrapuram road was also hit by the flood.
