Ban mining, says DSS

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Government must immediately ban mining, arrest those responsible for illegal mining and put an end to the plunder of natural resources, the Karnataka Dalit Sangharsh Samithi demanded here on Wednesday.

DSS State president N. Murthy told presspersons that illegal mining, particularly in Bellary, had affected the livelihood of lakhs of people, destroyed the environment and groundwater resources. Mining should be nationalised, he said.

Mr. Murthy said the police had lathi-charged a group of Dalits who were peacefully taking out a march to the Chief Minister's residence here on August 8.

They had been protesting against the demolition of slums in Bangalore, which had rendered thousands of Dalits homeless, he said.
