Disaster management techniques explained


A workshop on `Disaster Management' was organised by the NSS units of Sri Paramakalyani College, Alwarkurichi, recently to create an awareness among the volunteers of the things to be done during natural calamities.

The Principal, G. Devarajan, presided over while the Secretary, P. Ramanathan, felicitated the participants. Resource persons such as S. Kanniah, Dr. R. Murugesan, Dr. S. Palani Kumar explained various measures to be followed before and after various hazards.

The Fire Officer, Ambasamduram, T. Ramaswamy, demonstrated various fire-fighting techniques to the students. Participation certificates were distributed to the NSS volunteers at the valedictory function.

NSS volunteers of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University and some of the affiliated colleges took out a communal harmony rally at Palayamkottai, which was flagged off by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Tirunelveli Range, Kanhu Charan Mahali, at VOC Grounds, Palayamkottai.

Nearly 450 volunteers from St. Xavier's College, St. John's College, Sadakkathullah Appa College, Sarada College for Women, Sarah Tucker College, Rose Mary College of Arts and Science, Rani Anna Government College for Women, MDT Hindu College and volunteers from university departments participated.

The volunteers carried placards stressing the importance of communal harmony and national integration. The NSS Coordinator, MSU, S. Mookaiah, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), R. Dhinakaran, and the NSS programme officers of various schools participated.

The National Engineering College conducted a three-day Ph.D. aspirants' meet on `Academic Research: industrial perspective' on its premises at Kovilpatti recently.

Delivering the inaugural address, S. Swaminathan, Head (Process Audit Group) of Accenture IDC in Chennai, said though the country had made gigantic progress in the Information Technology arena in general, we had lagged behind in the research segment.

He called upon students to improve their communication skills and concentrate on multi-disciplinary areas such as accounting, supply chain management and remote project management.

K.S.K. Chockalingam, Principal, NEC, spoke. About 40 persons attended the meet.

The Department of Computer Science at the G. Venkataswamy Naidu College, Kovilpatti, conducted a free computer training for school teachers, children and housewives on its premises recently.

On the first and second days, 20 teachers and 40 students from R.C. Middle School at Illayarasanendal were trained. Over the next four days, another set of 17 teachers, 30 students and seven housewives from villages situated around Kovilpatti were given training.

The college also conducted a school and college meet, `Tech Festa 2K6,' at Kovilpatti recently. Lectures and competitions marked the event.

Sri Kumara Gurupara Swamigal Arts College at Srivaikundam near Tuticorin conducted a blood donation camp on its premises on September 20.

In all, teachers and students donated 80 units of blood to the blood bank at Tuticorin Medical College and Hospital.

An intercollegiate quiz competition was conducted in the multipurpose hall of Holy Cross College in Nagercoil recently.

The quiz club of the college organised the annual quiz competition on general knowledge and current events.

The Principal Elsy George patronised this programme and the staff in charge of the quiz club Premalatha Dinakarlal and Usha Oommen made all arrangements. Students from more than 30 colleges in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts participated.
