Congress corporators clash

Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR: The meeting of general body of Muncipal Corporation of Anantapur here on Wednesday turned out to be a platform for settling personal scores between different groups among the ruling Congress corporators.

It all began when an independent corporator Ramakrishna Reddy alleged large scale irregularities in the transfer and promotions of teachers in municipal schools. In absence of the corporation manager, a senior assistant Shakuntalamma, refuted the charges and explained that they had followed roster and guidelines properly.

Intervening, Congress corporator Muralidhar alleged that Mayor R. Parasuram had a role in the transfer and promotion of teachers. In fact, the Mayor was involved in several other irregularities involving huge funds, he alleged. Refuting his charges, two other Congress corporators -- Lingamurthy and Kranti John Wesley (cooption member) - objected to the manner in which Muralidhar had spoken without the permission of the chair and levelled baseless charges.

Another Congress corporator P. Mallikarjuna and Deputy Mayor B. Sriramulu also joined the issue and said allegations of corruption against the Mayor were appearing in the media.

Accusing the Congress of wasting time, corporators belonging to TDP, CPI and CPI (M) boycotted the meet and staged a protest.
