DYNAMIC ENTREPRENEURS: Collector M. Danakishore examining a jeans manufacturing unit set up by women at Molagavalli in Kurnool district on Wednesday.

KURNOOL: Twenty women of Molagavalli in Aluru mandal of Kurnool set up a jeans manufacturing unit with the technical support of Myrada voluntary organisation and financial support from the livelihood programme of District Water Management Agency (DWMA). Collector M. Danakishore visited the village and interacted with members on Wednesday.

The women completed their training and were ready for commercial production. An amount of Rs. 75,000 was received from the watershed programme and the beneficiaries pooled Rs. 1 lakh to set up the business.

Expansion plans

The group tied up with a jeans unit at Bellary to do finishing and branding of jeans and market the products.

The group engaged a tutor from Bellary to teach them nuances of jeans manufacturing by paying a monthly salary of Rs. 3,000. D. Nagaraju, project incharge of Myrada, said the unit would be expanded to provide work to 200 persons soon.

Apart from jeans, the group also planned to manufacture handbags and trousers. The Collector who visited the village as part of his study of impact of drought and migration of labourers to other places visited the unit. In Molagavalli alone, around 600 families left the village this season.

The Collector promised to provide them work if the families returned. Under the short-term employment generation programme, two persons from each family were assured work at Rs.80 per head.
