UP IN ARMS: Medical representatives staging a dharna in Anantapur.
ANANTAPUR: The district unit of Andhra Pardesh Medical and Sales Representatives' Union staged a dharna in front of the office of a private pharmaceutical company here demanding implementation of Sales Promotion Employees' Act, 1976. Speaking at the protest, State general secretary A.G. Rajamohan, district secretary Shaikshavali, district general secretary of CITU M. Imtiaz and others alleged that the State Government was neglecting the SPE Act and favouring the managements. Against bearing about 50 per cent of people's expenditure on medicines by the Government in developed countries like UK the Union Government was bearing only 17 per cent, they stated. In the quest for profits, the Government was allowing pharma companies to increase the prices of medicines frequently beyond the reach of common man. Besides, the indiscriminate competition between the multinational companies and small indigenous companies was forcing closure of small companies. The government was also turning a blind eye on the spurious medicines and the incapacitated drug control mechanism was further harming the people's health.
