Candidates file papers for local body polls

Special Correspondent

To be held in two phases

CHENNAI: Electoral process for local body elections in the State started with the filing of nomination papers on Wednesday.

As many as 457 candidates filed their nominations for the posts of councillors and ward members of corporations, municipalities and panchayat unions on the opening day. The last date for filing the papers is September 27. The elections will be held in two phases, on October 13 and October 15.

Unlike the previous local body elections held in October 2001 when corporation Mayors, municipality and panchayat union chairmen were elected directly, this time they will be elected through indirect elections by elected councillors on October 28.

Meanwhile, major political parties started their poll preparations. Both the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam constituted committees for seat sharing talks with their respective alliance parties.

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president M. Krishnasswamy held discussions with his party leaders at the party headquarters Sathyamurthi Bhavan earlier in the day in which Union Minister E.V.K.S. Elangovan, party MLA K.V. Thangkabalu and deputy leader of Congress Legislature Party D. Yesoda participated.
