Foreign team in Alappuzha to study plan process

Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: A 15-member Government delegation from Bangladesh and a delegate from South Africa held discussions with district panchayat president R. Nazar and other members at the district panchayat office here on Wednesday.

The visit was aimed at studying the system of local government in the State prior to finalisation of Siraj Gunj Local Governance Development Fund Project in Bangladesh. Muhammed Talebar Rahman, director general of local government division, led the delegation. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) arranged the visit through Kerala Institute of Local Administration (KILA).

The delegation also visited Kanjikuzhy block panchayat and Cherthala South grama panchayat in the district to have a first hand experience of the functioning of the panchayat and the various projects being implemented by the local bodies there. Speaking to The Hindu, the delegations said they were highly impressed by the functioning of local bodies in the State. They said the participation of people in the local bodies seemed to be greater here compared to their countries and they would try to emulate that example. Zenela, South African member of the delegation, and Salim Fakir, member of Bangladeshi delegation, said their countries too followed three-tier local body system as in Kerala.
