ALAPPUZHA: A three-member team of the Indian Medical Council (IMC) visited Alappuzha Medical College on Wednesday to study infrastructure facilities there. The team's visit was as per the direction of the Supreme Court in a case filed by the State Government seeking approval of the council to increase the number of MBBS seats in the college. Team members A.K. Jain, Kamalesh Kohli and Thiru Narayanan visited the T.D. Medical College, Vandanam, Medical College Hospital in the town, the unit of the Medical College Hospital at Vandanam, students hostel, hospital laboratory and records library. Though the State Government had planned to raise the number of MBBS seats in the T.D. Medical College from 100 to 150, an IMC team that visited in June this year had denied permission citing insufficient infrastructure. The team had then found that the absence of space in the hospital, lack of basic infrastructure, insufficient staff strength and the distance between the hospital and the medical college were not favourable for raising the number seats. The State Government went to the court against the decision of the IMC. Medical College Principal Mehrunnisa on Wednesday explained to the team members the steps taken by the State Government to shift the hospital from Alappuzha municipality to Vandanam and the various steps being taken to upgrade the facilities. The Medical college authorities also explained to the IMC team the comprehensive project being implemented by the State Government for developing the hospital.
