The NSS unit of the E. G. S. Pillay Arts and Science College in Nagapattinam conducted one-day personality development programme recently. R. Karunanithi, Principal of E. G. S. Pillay Engineering College, Nagapattinam, who inaugurated the programme, spoke about leadership qualities and advised the students to improve the communication skill in the present competitive environment. J. P. Jeyakumar, Principal of the E. G. S. Pillay Arts and Science College, presided over the programme. S. Ramadoss, secretary of Chinmaya Mission, Nagapattinam, V. C. Malarmannan, chief marketing consultant of mPower Force Technology, Tiruchi and M. Arumporai Chemmal, HRD trainer, Continental Academy, Nagapattinam, delivered lectures on motivation, interpersonal relationship and win the race. K. Kanagaraju, NSS coordinator of Bharathidasan University, Tiruchi, delivered the valedictory address and distributed certificates to the volunteers. S. Jayaprakash, NSS programme officer, welcomed the gathering. R. Natarajan, NSS programme officer, proposed a vote of thanks. NSS students from Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Thanjavur districts participated in the programme. NCC volunteers of Srinivasa Subbaraya Polytechnic College at Puttur near Sirkazhi in Nagapattinam district organised an anti-tobacco lecture and a rally recently. S.Veezhinathan, Head of the Department of Chemistry, Poompuhar College, delivered a special lecture and spoke on the evil effects of use of tobacco. P. Bhoopathy, principal of the polytechnic, presided over the programme. A. Baskaran, Associate NCC Officer, welcomed the gathering. NCC cadets conducted anti tobacco rally from Puttur to Kollidam. Students of M. Kumarasamy College of Engineering, Thalavapalayam, Karur, cornered glory at the inter-collegiate project exposition in Chennai for developing a `brain wave machine'. J. Jayakumar, P. Harish and T. Selvam, all final year Electronics and Communication Engineering students, bagged the honour for their project after impressing the judges with high performance. The controlled light and sound waves emitted from the brain wave machine at varying wave lengths when allowed to travel over the head and eyes of a person externally stimulates the brain wave, ultimately leading the person to feel like wakening up from a slumber and also feel fresh, besides increasing his attentive ability. The College secretary, K. Ramakrishnan, Director U. S. Sarvdayaparan, and principal J. Kumar, lauded the students for their achievement. A chikungunya awareness programme was organised for the students of the Government Arts College, Thanthonrimalai, in Karur by the Leo Club. Vijayakumar from the Primary Health Centre, Kodangipatti, enlightened the students on the various measures that should be taken to prevent it. A lively interaction took place between the students, who wanted to know more about the problem and its spread. At the end of session, it was decided that the Leo Club and NSS volunteers would reach out to the nearby villages to create awareness of chikungunya among the rural population. Principal (in charge) Radhakrishnan, Leo Club Advisor D. Anbalagan, Faculty Advisor R. Ramamurthy, and NSS officers were present.
The new office-bearers of the Rotaract Club of J. J. College of Arts and Science, Pudukottai, were installed at a function organised by the Rotary Club of Pudukottai at the college premises recently. The president of the Pudukottai Chamber of Commerce, A. N. Kasiviswanathan inducted M. Srinivasan as president and his team of office-bearers on the occasion. A blood donation camp was also conducted. It was inaugurated by the Superintendent of Police, Kapilkumar C. Saratkar. The in-charge of the Blood Bank, Government Headquarters Hospital, G. Edwin explained the importance of blood donation and urged the Rotaract Club to organise similar camps at regular intervals. The president of the Rotary Club of Pudukottai, S. Prithiviraj, the secretary of the college, N. Subramaniam, Trustee, Kavitha Subramaniam, advisor, S. Sampath, Principal, J. Parasuraman and others offered felicitations. The Principal gave away certificates to the students who donated blood at the camp. He also gave away a certificate to the SP, who had donated blood in a similar camp held on the previous day. A total of 91 units of blood was donated to the Blood Bank. M. Srinivasan was installed as president while A. Subash Chandra Bose as vice-president. Others installed were secretary: S. Nagendran, secretary, V. Rajkumar assistant secretary, and A. L. Alahuraja. The Resonance Club of Chemistry of the J. J. College of Arts and Science, organised a special lecture session on `Organic structural elucidation by spectroscopic techniques.' A faculty from the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, S. Kumaresan, who delivered the lecture, explained the application of various spectroscopic techniques in establishing the structures or organic molecules. The Head of the Department of Chemistry (in-charge), D. Ilangeswaran said the lecture would benefit students who aspire for the competitive examination for the post of lecturers and Fellow conducted by the University Grants Commission and other agencies. Hotel management and catering technology has been emerging as a prospective career for the youths. Realising this fact, colleges with such courses make it a point to organise special lectures to help the students understand the nuances of the hospitality industry, customer care and service etc. Under the auspices of the Department of Hotel Management of the Srinivasan College of Arts and Science in Perambalur, a special seminar on `Bar management' was held recently. The resource person, Ramakrishnan from the Taj Residency, Mumbai, spoke on the present-day changing trends in the bar in the leading hospitality units. He gave tips on developing a sound knowledge in continental styles and new recipes. The Head of the Department, S. Yoganand was among those who spoke. The Junior Chamber of India Aranthangi Central conducted an inter-college elocution and quiz competitions at the Naina Mohamed College of Arts and Science recently. The Correspondent of the college, N. Mohamed Farook, distributed prizes to the winners. The president of the JCI Aranthangi Central, G. Gopalakrishnan, said the competition aimed at identifying the talents of the college students and their general aptitude. A number of students from the Naina Mohamed College, Government Polytechnic College, both in Aranthangi, Venkateswara College, Peravurani and H.H. Rajah's College in Pudukottai participated in the events.
