COUNTDOWN: An IAF helicopter makes a trial landing at the Mandapam helipad on Wednesday.
RAMANATHAPURAM: Security agencies have been put on high alert in view of President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's visit to his hometown on Saturday. Besides visiting his home on Muslim Street at Rameswaram, the President is likely to visit Sri Guru Nanak Dham and a mosque. While the Navy and Coast Guard have stepped up vigil along the International Maritime Boundary Line and the shallow waters off the Ramanathapuram coast, the Coastal Security Group has intensified checking. A helicopter based at the Naval Air Station at Uchipuli has launched surveillance sorties. The police have mobilised more than 2,000 personnel. "Foolproof security has been made at all vantage points. The entire island has been brought under a security blanket," said R. Thirugnanam, Superintendent of Police, on Wednesday. The police would monitor the activities of the inmates at the Sri Lankan Tamil refugees camp at Mandapam. An Indian Air Force helicopter made a trial landing at the helipad at Mandapam on Wednesday. Armed policemen have been posted at all vital installations, including the Pamban road and rail bridges and the Ramanathaswamy temple.
