Heavy rain claims 16 lives

Over 2,000 families shifted to four relief camps in Karimnagar


  • 502 houses completely damaged in the district
  • Crops destroyed in over 1.08 lakh hectares

    KARIMNAGAR. The death toll in the incessant rain and the subsequent floods rose to 16 in Karimangar district on Wednesday, according an official release.

    Revenue authorities shifted 2,277 families to four relief camps including three in Karimnagar and one in Peddapalli town. They started distributing rice and kerosene to affected families and also compensation to people who lost their houses in the floods.

    Preliminary reports state 502 houses were completly damaged and 4,380 houses were partially damaged. Eleven cattle also perished in the havoc. Crops were destroyed in over 1.08 lakh hectares. Over 600 km of R&B roads and 34 km of Panchayat Raj roads were damaged.

    The RTC had incurred a loss of about Rs 25 lakhs due to non-plying of its services on Tuesday. The BSNL authorities also incurred losses with 22 telephone exchanges damaged in the district.

    Meanwhile, the town is limping back to normalcy with let up in rain on Wednesday.

    Telugu Desam deputy floor leader in the Assembly T. Devender Goud visited the flood-ravaged Karimnagar town and consoled the affected families. He inspected the damages in various localities and assured the locals of ensuring speedy relief and rehabilitation from the Government.

    In a brief chat with newsmen, he demanded the government to provide the relief and rehabilitation on a war footing to the affected persons according to the government specified norms. The TDP district president, L Ramana and others were also present.
