CHENNAI: Carnatica, a Chennai-based cultural organisation, is organising something different to celebrate the World Peace Day on Thursday. The organisation, in association with Sri Krishna Sweets and Narada Gana Sabha, has planned a full day's activity in prominent public places, schools and colleges and various cultural organisations. The Peace One Day (POD) project began as the vision of British filmmaker Jeremy Gilley. Launched in September 1999, POD gained active support from governments and individuals. In September 2001 POD achieved its primary objective when the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution (A/Res/55/282), put forward by the UK and Costa Rican governments, formally establishing an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence on the UN International Day of Peace. It was fixed in the global calendar on September 21 - Peace Day. Peace One Day has recognised Carnatica as its representative to observe Peace Day annually in India. The celebrations start on Thursday morning on the Marina at 6 a.m. and move on to MOP Vaishnav College and Vivekananda College. The finale would be at the Narada Gana Sabha at 6 p.m., with dance and cultural performances by participants ranging from Carnatic legends Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman, N. Ramani and T.N. Krishnan to Sriram Parasuram and Anuradha Sriram. The programme has been conceptualised by K.N. Shashikiran, Director, Carnatica. For details, call 9444018270, 9840232685 or 42124130.
