CHENNAI
: The Madras High Court has ordered notice to the City Commissioner of Police and the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department Secretary, besides 10 others, on a writ petition seeking to evict encroachers of a temple property in Anna Nagar.
A Division Bench comprising Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice S. Tamilvanan ordered the notices on a joint petition filed by S. Jagannatha Pandian and Ravindra Kumar.
According to the petitioners, some people had encroached the land belonging to the Thirumangaleeswarar Temple on the 200 feet road at Thirumangalam in Anna Nagar.
Despite complaints to the Commissioner of Police, bringing to her notice the fact that the land had been fraudulently registered in the names of individuals, no action was taken, they said.
They added that a bank too had sanctioned loans to the persons concerned.
The petitioners said that though the land belonged to the temple, the encroachers had built a wall around the temple. This prevented devotees from entering the premises.
They alleged that the "land grabbers" had financial muscle and enjoyed political support.
