One-year-old operated upon for cataract

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: A 12-month-old boy was successfully operated upon for cataract in both the eyes, at a speciality eye hospital here.

The baby's mother Pushpalata suspected that the baby, Chiranjivi, had poor vision as he had difficulty in identifying her. On noticing the white opacity in the cornea of both the eyes, she rushed the infant to the hospital.

Dr. K.M. Suresh diagnosed the baby with "congenital cataract" in both eyes and conducted the operation. He said, "The case was of high risk as the child is only 12 months old and should be operated under general anaesthesia. Further, the surgery involves the most delicate sensory structures."

After removing the cataract, the doctor implanted intraocular lenses in both the eyes using latest technology of phacoemulsification. Dr. Suresh said cataract was normally seen in old age and was rare at birth, childhood and adolescence.
