Minister lauds district education system

Staff Correspondent

`Students attracted by medical and engineering colleges'

  • Kerala students also benefit from education infrastructure
  • There is need for a good quality national library

MANGALORE: Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi has appreciated the progress made by Dakshina Kannada district in the field of education, especially professional education. The number of medical and engineering colleges in Dakshina Kannada district especially in and around Mangalore was attracting students from all over India, he said.

In an interaction with presspersons here on Monday, Mr. Ravi observed that the overall environment for education was very good in the district. According to him, professional and other educational institutions have maintained their quality. However, both the state and central governments should pay attention to developing requisite infrastructure here, he said.

According to the Minister, students from Kerala too have benefited from the education infrastructure here, especially in paramedical courses.

The involvement of private players in the field of education had made this possible. Mr. Ravi said quality of education imparted in these institutions was widely acclaimed and was responsible for attracting more students. Observing that the district needed a superior library, he said bodies such as the University Grants Commission should come forward to set it up.

    National library

He stressed on the need to set up national libraries in different parts of the country similar to the British Council Library.

Such a facility would aid students from socially and economically poorer sections of the society. These students do not have access to good reference materials and facilities such as the Internet in their respective institutions. Setting up of national libraries would be the ideal way to help students from all sections of society, he said.
