Student-centric assessment model arrives Lady Doak College is implementing the mechanism from this academic year with a periodic review

MADURAI: The Lady Doak College here has evolved an assessment mechanism for the faculty based on student learning with an aim to upgrade teaching on a par with global standards.

It is ready with a `model' that can be followed by other autonomous colleges.

After an orientation programme for junior/senior faculty members given in two phases, the college is implementing the mechanism from this academic year with a periodic review.

"Evaluation will no longer be teacher-centred. The faculty are now tuned to assessment based on students' work," says Nirmala Jeyaraj, Principal.

The models of the universities of Indiana and Virginia in the U.S. were examined in detail and education experts also helped in the process.

Faculty with less than five years of experience and also the senior faculty of all departments were trained at special workshops.

According to Kasthuribhai Dhanasekaran, Dean (Humanities), and Mercy Pushpalatha, Dean (Sciences), the stress from now on will be student-oriented and each department has been asked to prepare a mission statement.

The workshops were held under the auspices of the college's Centre for Human Resources Development.

Its Coordinator, Srilatha Sampathkumar, says that learning outcome will be analysed in depth.

The Principal was optimistic that the assessment of learning would help the college usher in academic reforms.
