Meet on female foeticide today

Concern voiced over the abuse of sex determination test


  • It is organised by the Andhra Pradesh State Social Welfare Board
  • 1,200 delegates will participate in the meeting
  • The sex ratio in the State is 978 females for 1,000 males

    HYDERABAD: A one-day State-level meet on `Female foeticide' is being organised here on Thursday by the Andhra Pradesh State Social Welfare Board to sensitise people against the practice of gender discrimination. It is aimed at protecting the right of the girl child, K. Rama Devi, chairperson of the board, told a press conference here on Wednesday.

    She said the meet was also intended to create mass opinion against the practice, with the help of representatives of voluntary organisations, members of self-help groups and NGOs. Over 1,200 of these representatives would attend.

    She said that this was the first such meet to be organised by the Central Social Welfare Board in the country.

    Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy would inaugurate the meet while Union Ministers Renuka Chowdhary , P. Lakshmi and State Minister N. Rajyalakshmi would attend.
