Several BMP officials fined under RTI Act

It is Rs. 250 a day for the delay in giving information

Bangalore: The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike on Tuesday exhibited its seriousness about the Right to Information (RTI) Act by slapping a fine of Rs. 5,250 on another 11 of its officials for not providing information as demanded under the Act.

On Monday, 11 Assistant Executive Engineers (AEE) of the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) had been slapped a fine of Rs 2,250 each. They were charged with delaying tactics.

The fine on Tuesday was levied on officials from the west zone for not providing information to V. Bhaskar of Nivarana Seva Trust. Mr. Bhaskar had asked for 18 documents regarding ongoing and completed construction projects in west zone.

The fine has been calculated at the rate of Rs. 250 per day for nine days from August 28 (the date when the information was sought). It will be deducted from the officials' salary in September.

Public Information Officer Satyanarayana, who is also the Chief Engineer (West) in the BMP, had asked the officials to attend a meeting on Monday with full information demanded by the applicant. But since the officials failed to provide information at the meeting, they had been fined, a notice sent to the officials said.

Mr. Satyanarayana has directed them to provide the required information within 48 hours.

Following are the engineers who have been fined: Assistant Executive Engineers Rajagopal (Rajajinagar), Gangadhar Swamy (Sri Rama Mandira), J.C. Siddegowda (Gandhinagar) K.G. Jagadish (Chickpet), Vijay Kumar (Mahalakshmipuram), Bettegowda (Gayathrinagar); Executive Engineers A.M. Naik (Rajajinagar), B.T. Ramesh (Gandhinagar) and Ka.Naik (Malleswaram) and an official from the Town Planning Department.

Builders fined

Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) has levied fines to the tune of Rs. 27,34,985 in the past six months on companies and individuals for encroachment and piling of debris on pavements and roads, a press release from the BMP said.

The east division has levied fines up to Rs. 18,22,995, west up to Rs. 3,86,840 and south up to Rs. 5,25,150.
