AS PART of its six-city education road show initiative in India, the Singapore Tourism Board recently held its "Study in Singapore" exhibition in the city. The fair featured a series of informative seminars. The seminar topics, designed to address key issues faced by students and their parents, included opportunities in undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Singapore, living in Singapore and sharing from Singapore Education alumni members. In all, 23 education institutions based in the City State participated in the fair. The Indian students' traditional preference for MBA and courses in engineering, information technology, sciences and business and an emerging interest in hospitality and design was reflected in the institutes that took part: Duke--NUS Graduate Medical School, German Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) and Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies (IDSS). The University of New South Wales and University of Nevada Las Vegas, which had established campuses in Singapore, were part of the education fair. There are over 70,000 international students in Singapore. The Singapore Tourism Board has proposed to increase this number to 1.5 lakh students by 2015. For Indian high school students looking for study opportunities in Singapore, the University of New South Wales Asia will open its doors in March 2007. It is a comprehensive research and teaching institution, owned and operated by the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia. Courses in this university are designed to equip students with a broad range of communication, research and management skills. Indian students will get the opportunity to move between the university's Sydney and Singapore campuses. From March 2007, UNSW Asia will offer courses ranging from Commerce and Engineering to International Studies, some of which will be available in double degree programmes. The university will focus on undergraduate and research programmes in its first year. Postgraduate programmes will be offered from 2008.
