26 nominations on the first day

TIRUCHI: A total of 26 nominations were received for the local body elections on the opening day of the poll process on Wednesday.

Of these, 24 nominations were filed for village panchayat wards and two for village panchayat presidents. No nomination was received for the Corporation, Municipalities, Town Panchayats and Panchayat Unions in the district, official sources said.

No water supply

Drinking water supply will remain suspended in the following areas on Thursday owing to a leak in the drinking water mains near the Fort Station Road: Marakkadai, Madurai Road, Viragupettai, Woraiyur, Big Bazaar Road, East Boulevard Road, Varaganeri, Gandhi Market, Jeeva Nagar and Tharanallur. Corporation engineers are engaged in repairing the broken mains and supply will be restored to these areas on Friday, the Corporation Commissioner, B. Balachandran said in a press release.

TNSTC specials

The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Tiruchi, will operate special buses to the following temples from Tiruchi, Karur, Ariyalur and Thuraiyur on Purattasi Saturdays falling on September 23 and 30 and October 7 and 14: The specials will ply on the Tiruchi-Gunaseelam (Prasanna Venkatachalapathy Temple), Tiruchi-Thiruvellarai (Pundarikaksha Perumal Temple), Tiruchi-Srirangam (Sri Ranganathswamy Temple), Karur-Thanthonrimalai (Kalyana Venkatramanswamy Temple), Ariyalur-Kallankurichi (Kaliyuga Varadharaja Perumal Temple) and Thuraiyur-Perumalmalai (Prasanna Venkatachalapathi Temple) routes, according to a TNSTC Press release.

Special drive

As part of a special drive for early identification and treatment of deaf and dumb children, the district administration has called upon parents of children (in the age group of 0-2.5 years) with such disabilities to register the names of their wards with the staff of the Integrated Child Development Scheme centres or anganwadi centres of the district. The Collector, Ashish Vachhani, in a press release, stated that the identified children would be provided special training and integrated into regular schools.

Mettur level

The level at the Mettur dam stood at 106 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Wednesday. The inflow was 14,367 cusecs and the outflow 20,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter
