Orders for release of funds under way

  • Some 322 million gallons of water per day expected to reach twin cities after completion of the Krishna project
  • Reservoirs necessary in view of the increased demand projections for the years to come
  • Study commissioned in MCH limits

HYDERABAD: The Centre has agreed in principle to fund 13 new reservoirs of 100 million litres day capacity to store the huge volume of water - 322 million gallons per day - expected to reach the twin cities after the completion of the second phase of the Krishna drinking water supply project.

Necessary orders for releasing the funds under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNURM) were under way, according to the Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board managing director K.S. Jawahar Reddy, who appraised the reservoir proposals to the Central Sanction and Monitoring Committee at New Delhi on Tuesday.

    Study in MCH limits

He said additional capacity reservoirs were crucial not only to bring the entire allotment of Krishna water into the HMWSSB network, but also in view of the increased demand projections for the years to come.

The water board commissioned a demand-supply study in the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad limits by Mumbai-based Tata Consulting Engineers and as per the projections, seven reservoirs of 50.5 Mld capacity north of Musi and six of 49.50 Mld south of the river Musi were required to meet the demands by the year 2011.

The new reservoirs would come up at Patigadda, Chilkalguda, Narayanguda, Asifnagar, Allabanda, Shaikpet, New Thattikhana, Asmangadh, Vaishalinagar, DRDO township, Barkas, Maisaram and Miralam Tank. "By constructing these reservoirs, we may be able to ensure daily water supply too."

The study also revealed that the projected storage capacity in 20 water supply distribution zones of the MCH area would shoot up to 264 Mld for a population of 5.70 million by the year 2021.
