Sheila should resign: BJP

Staff Reporter

Own up moral responsibility for loss of lives, says Harsh Vardhan

NEW DELHI: Even as Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday accused the Capital's traders' associations and the Bharatiya Janata Party of "politicising" the court orders, the Delhi BJP demanded that she own up moral responsibility for the loss of life during police firing in Seelampur area of East Delhi during the Delhi bandh and quit from her post.

Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan and former Union Minister and senior BJP leader Vijay Goel demanded resignation of the Chief Minister "for leading the Capital to a state of anarchy".

Reacting to the killing of innocent citizens in police firing in East Delhi, Dr. Vardhan termed the firing and lathi-charge on the people as a shameful incident and a blot on the Congress regime. He said it was unfortunate that after being uprooted through sealing and demolitions, the people now were being subjected to brutal assault by the police under the United Progressive Alliance regime.

Mr. Goel said Ms. Dikshit had no right to remain in office as she had lost the moral right to govern.

"She had failed to protect the life and property of the citizens of Delhi and the killing of innocent people in incidents of firing had clearly indicated that the Congress Government and its Chief Minister were behind the merciless killing of innocent people who were fighting for their survival."

Accusing the Delhi Government and the UPA Government at the Centre for taking the people of Delhi for a ride, Mr. Goel said the turn of events had made it clear that the interests of the people of Delhi were not safe in the hands of the Chief Minister and it was time she stepped down for having failed to protect her own citizens.

On the other hand, caught between the devil and the deep-sea, the elected representatives of the Congress party also joined hands with the traders, lending "indirect support" to the agitators who hit the streets of the Capital during the Delhi bandh to protest the sealing and demolition exercise.

Detained

Delhi BJP chief Harsh Vardhan along with a number of supporters was detained by police today while protesting against the MCD's ongoing sealing drive in the Capital.

The BJP leader was detained as he along with party activists participated in traders' protests in Lakshmi Nagar area of East Delhi.

Claiming police high-handedness on the protestors, the Delhi BJP chief said the police used teargas against the agitators and lathicharged them although they were carrying out a peaceful protest.

Inquiry ordered

Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday night ordered a magisterial inquiry into the violence and police firing at Seelampur which resulted in the killing of three people.

The probe would look into all aspects of violence and police action, official sources told PTI.
