What's in a name?

Yet another controversy over names is brewing; this time over the naming of the new superspecialty block at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital, which will be inaugurated by Health Minister P.K.Sreemathy on Saturday.

Fifteen years ago when the project was drawn up, the State Government had decided that the proposed eight-storeyed complex would be named after K.N. Pisharody, the first Principal of the MCH.

But, now the authorities are having second thoughts.

It will be simply known as superspecialty block, said P.V. Ramachandran, MCH Principal, without assigning any reasons.

A little more than a year ago, the council of the Kozhikode Corporation witnessed a pandemonium over the naming of the Corporation Stadium in memory of the first Chief Minister of Kerala, E.M.S. Nampoodiripad, who was considered by many to be the architect of modern Kerala. Finally it was named after him.

Similarly, a controversy erupted over the naming of the Calicut Airport after the late Defence Minister V.K. Krishna Menon. Now the only airport in North Kerala is called Calicut Airport.
