A speech in golden voice

If there is one man in Kerala who can rival even the hottest film star's popularity it is K.J. Jesudas.

On Tuesday, when he arrived, along with his wife Prabha, at the Kandamkulam Jubilee Hall for the Mullassery Raju Music Award ceremony, you could feel the excitement in the air.

As he walked to the front row of chairs, he had to request the excited crowd to sit down again and continue listening to a programme of ghazals by Manjari.

He was soon swarmed by an army of press photographers, who clicked away for some 10 minutes, but he showed no uneasiness.

Jesudas didn't sing at the function; he was there to present the award to music director Vidyasagar. But he did make a speech which had the audience listening in rapt attention. He said what Malayalam films needed were the situations to create good songs. "The directors should try to ensure that there are at least two or three good songs in a film. We still have talented music directors and singers, but they should be given opportunities to come up with melodious songs," he said.

P.K. AJITH KUMAR
