Does the crime rate in the Sate go up when the Assembly is in session? Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan seems to think so. Addressing a meeting of District Collectors and Superintendents of Police here recently, Mr. Balakrishnan urged the officials to remain doubly vigilant in view of the Assembly session. Earlier, reporting on the law and order situation in the areas under their jurisdiction, district officials said everything was under control, excepting a few cases requiring more vigil. "Though the situation is generally peaceful, you will have to note that the Assembly is in session. This is the time when the crime rate usually goes up and hence it would be advisable to be on the alert," Mr.Balakrishnan said. The Minister exhibited a politician's acute practical knowledge while responding to a request from officials for a special squad to crackdown on illegal sand-mining. "A special squad with Revenue and Police officials dedicated to the effort would only end up in the hands of the sand-mining mafia. A more practical solution would be to deploy officials on a rotational basis," he proposed.
