dated September 22, 1956: FAO Director-General

Mr. Binay Ranjan Sen, Indian Ambassador to Japan, was on September 20 elected Director-General of the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO). At the FAO conference in Rome, he was elected on the third ballot by 42 votes to 29 for the Dutch Agricultural Minister, Mr. S.L. Mansholt. Mr. Sen is the first Asian ever to be chosen as the head of a UN specialised agency.
