Autonomy will result in better facilities: PMK

Special Correspondent

Centre's decision is a welcome measure and should not be mistaken

Puducherry: Pattali Makkal Katchi Parliamentary party leader M Ramadoss has said the Central government's decision to raise JIPMER to a position of an institute of national importance should not be misunderstood.

Refutes charge

In release on Thursday, Mr. Ramadoss refuted the criticism of AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa that the Central Cabinet had not mentioned anywhere in the draft legislation that JIPMER would be made autonomous. He said all those propagating rumours against the Central Cabinet's decision were only misleading others.

He also disputed the allegation that if JIPMER was converted into a different status it would ultimately become a private undertaking.

This would never happen and it would continue to be under the control of the Central Government.

If JIPMER became an institute of national importance there would be better healthcare facilities and at least Rs. 300 crore would be available every year.

He said the Central Cabinet's decision was a welcome measure and would contribute a lot to the development of the institution.
