"Distribute land to landless ryots"

Special Correspondent

Farmers take out rally

Puducherry: Members of the Puducherry units of All India Farmers Union and the Farm Labourers Union took out a rally here on Thursday to urge the administration to distribute free farmlands to landless farmers and house site pattas to labourers.

They held a demonstration in Bharathi park near the Assembly later.

Appeal to Government

The speakers appealed to the Government to confer ownership rights on those living in poromboke and government land. Lands possessed by industrialists and other institutions in Puducherry in excess of the Land Reforms' prescription should be taken over and redistributed to the landless.

A full-fledged enquiry should be ordered to trace the lands that had been illegally occupied and usurped in the Union Territory.

The unions also sought ban on the conversion of fertile lands for non-agricultural purposes and for real estate business.

Among those who addressed the demonstrators include T Murugan (member of the Tamilnadu committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Secretary of the Pondicherry unit of the CPI (M) V. Perumal, member of the party's executive committee P.Selvasingh, farmer's union leaders Nilavazhagan and V.Saravanan and deputy secretary of the CPI (M) R Rajangam.
