Chennai: Sai Meera Ravi of Bank Sports Board, punished the poor opening choice of Tamil Nadu player S. Sujatha in just 16 moves to win and be among the four leaders at the end of the fourth round of the 33rd St. Joseph's National `B' chess championship here on Thursday. Sai Meera won with white pieces against Sujatha in the evening. In the morning Sai Meera handed a defeat to Alka Das, the University of Ranchi player. After four rounds, Sai Meera, P. Lakshmi Sahithi (AP), R. Preethi (TN) and Nimmy George (Ker) are leading with full four points. Seven rounds remain to be played. Top seed Nimmy beat Baisakhi Das (Jha) in 51 moves but only after the latter missed some opportunities near the end to force a draw. Preethi, an eleventh standard girl of Madurai's Dolphin School, defeated Madurai Kamaraj University player R. Mahima in 50 moves. Trained by Ghouse Kamardeen, this girl is yet to win a State title but has the potential to qualify for the National women's ` A'. In the morning, Preethi outsmarted Ketaki Kulkarni of Maharashtra in a breezy 19-move encounter with black pieces. Asian under-16 champion P. Lakshmi Sahithi of Andhra Pradesh outplayed Tamil Nadu's P. Sivasankari with the black pieces in a king's Indian defence.
Krithika's prize scalp
Tamil Nadu's Pon N. Krithika had a big fish when she got the better of third seed Kiran Monisha Mohanty of Orissa. Krithika, a tenth standard student of Model School, Chennai is sharing the fifth place with three others. In the morning session, Sujatha shocked defending champion Supriya Maji of Bengal while R. Mahima of Madurai overcame Iswarya Shobana of Salem. Top results (fourth round): Nimmy A.G. (Ker) 4 bt Baisakhi Das (Jha) 3; Sai Meera (BSB) 4 bt S. Sujatha (TN) 3; R. Preethi (TN) 4 bt R. Mahima (TN) 3; P. Sivasankari (TN) 3 lost to Lakshmi Sahithi (AP) 4; N. Raghavi (TN) 3.5 bt Saheli Nath (Ben) 2.5; Kiran Mohanty (Ori) 2.5 lost to Pon N. Krithika (TN) 3.5; P. Uthra (TN) 2.5 lost to P. Priya (TN) 3.5; J. Mohana Priya (AICF) 2.5 lost to J.E. Kavitha (TN) 3.5; Supriya Maji (Ben) 3 bt A.
