Hair gets support from Ponting

Kuala Lumpur: Umpire Darrell Hair — in the eye of a considerable storm — received support from the Australian skipper Ricky Ponting here on Thursday.

Asked about media reports that quoted Hair as saying he would officiate in the ICC Champions Trophy to be held in India, Ponting said, "You know he is among the best umpires in international cricket and should be standing in matches.

"Obviously, Darrell has been on the international panel for a long time and there's been a bit happening over the last month or so but I have always considered him to be a very good umpire."

Hair achieved recent notoriety when he offered to quit for a sum of $500,000 in the aftermath of the first forfeiture in Test cricket's history. — Special Correspondent
