CME programme

HUBLI: As many as 300 delegates are expected to participate in the Continued Medical Education programme (CME) on respiratory disorders being conducted by the Karnataka Board of Homeopahtic System of Medicine in Dharwad on September 24. Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, V.S. Shastrimath and S.N. Hiremath, members of the board, said the CME programme is in a series planned by the board. Belgaum: The Karnataka Law Society's Gogte College of Commerce will be organising a one-day seminar on "Accounting theory" at its premises here on September 26. Date extended

Dharwad: Karnatak University, Dharwad, has extended the last date for submitting applications with fine amount for the supplementary examinations of B.A, B.Sc., B.Com. (New), B.Com. (Revised Curriculum), B.Music., B.H.Sc., B.S.W Part 1, 2 and 3, B.Ed. (Non-semester) and B.A, B.Sc., B.Com., B.P.Ed., B.S.W, B.Ed. (Semester) being held during October and November, 2006. Launched

BIJAPUR: MLA from Tikota segment, M.B. Patil, on Thursday inaugurated Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, a comprehensive education programme assisted by the Centre, at Kannal village near here. He hoped the programme would help provide quality education to those in the remote area. Deputy Project Director of the scheme, M.M. Sindhura, said 13,000 students from poor families had been admitted under the scheme in the district. It had been planned to start 18 supportive residential schools in the district for the benefit of children, whose parents migrate to other places in search of jobs, he added.— Staff Correspondent

Inaugurated

Bidar: Superintendent of Police Roopa Divakar inaugurated the students' council of the Akka Mahadevi Women's College in Bidar on Wednesday.

She urged students of the region to study hard in order to compete with those from other parts of the State. "We should shed our prejudices and realise that our potential is unlimited," she said. Dharna on Sunday

Bidar: Members of the New School Development and Management Committees Association will stage a dharna in Bidar on Sunday seeking recognition to the newly-formed SDMCs in the district. A release said that office-bearers of the old SDMCs were not willing to let go of their power even after the new SDMCs were formed. This was affecting the functioning of schools and posing problems for headmasters, teachers and parents. "If the Government does not take steps to recognise the new SDMCs, we will organise a Statewide agitation," said a release by Sangamesh Nasigar, president of the association. — Staff Correspondent

Programme

Bidar: The District Legal Services Authority held a legal awareness programme in Manthal village in Basava Kalyan taluk on Tuesday. Hundreds of people from surrounding villages attended. Principal District and Sessions Judge P. Krishna Bhat inaugurated the programme. He said knowledge of law was essential for people in all walks of life. Rally in October

Bidar: The Ramachandrapura Math of Shimoga will organise a "Go Sansat" rally across the State in October. It will visit Humnabad on October 12, Bhalki on 13th and Bidar on 14th. Experts will speak on the need to protect and preserve the native breed of cattle.

Artistes will perform streetplays, Hari Kathe and dance dramas. Seer Sri Raghaveeshwara Bharati Swamiji would speak at all the three places, a release said. — Staff Correspondent

`Retract statement'

Bidar: The Congress has criticised Higher Education Minister D.H. Shankaramurthy's statement on Tipu Sultan. "Everyone knows Tipu's contribution to Karnataka. His love for the land is above suspicion. We will organise a Statewide agitation if the Minister does not retract his statement," Basava Kalyan taluk rural unit president Krishnappa Navadagi said in a release. — Staff Reporter

MES activists to go to Latur for dharna

Bidar: Some Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) activists have left for Latur in Maharashtra to join the dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office there on Friday, to protest against the alleged harassment of Marathi-speaking people in Karnataka. MES sources said that at least 50 activists from Aurad and Bhalki taluks would join the agitation there. The dharna in Latur is being organised by the MES and the Bharatiya Shetkari Kamgari Party. MES district president Ramrao Rathod, secretary Navanathrao Vasare, Yashwant Saigaonkar of Bhalki, Digambar Mankari, Yadavrao Karane, Vasanth Patil Tugaon, Sandip Telgaonkar, Kishanrao Patil Inchurkar, Jadhav, Sudhir Deshmukh and others have distributed pamphlets asking Marathi-speaking people to join the agitation. — Staff Correspondent

Emergency services

Bangalore: A two-day national seminar on helicopter emergency medical services and air ambulance services will take off at the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd Management Academy (HMA) from Friday. Organised by the Rotary Wing Society of India and sponsored by HAL, the seminar will cover how these services could be dovetailed for the benefit of accident victims and others who need to be taken from distances to a speciality hospital. To provide quick response within the "golden hour" when the impact of injuries can be minimised or a heart attack victim stabilised, experts feel helicopter resources available within each State should be integrated into a Disaster Management Response System. — Special Correspondent

Appeal to Governor

BANGALORE: The former MP and Irrigation Minister H.N. Nanje Gowda has urged the Governor T.N. Chaturvedi to direct the Government to call off the proposed legislature session at Belgaum failing which the Governor should gear up to dismiss the Government as holding such a session will be in violation of the Constitution. In a letter to the Governor here on Thursday, he said the Government could not be a party to denigrate the prestige, dignity, sanctity and supremacy of the Legislature. This act of the Government was not merely a bad precedent but also a historical blunder. "It is a constitutional impropriety being perpetrated by the Government of Karnataka under the leadership of Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy," he said. — Special Correspondent

Madikeri: Former Minister M.C. Nanaiah has been selected for the H.D. Chowdaiah Trust Award, Mandya, for his distinguished services in the field of cooperation, according to a press release here on Thursday. H.G. Awareness campaign

BANGALORE: To mark World Heart Day on Sunday, the Cardiological Society of India in association with Rotary Club will launch an awareness campaign on prevention of heart ailments. The campaign includes medical check-up camps for over 10,000 Rotarians and an awareness programme on radio. S.S. Ramesh, president of CSI's Karnataka chapter, told presspersons here on Wednesday that initially members of over 70 Rotary Clubs and their families would be medically examined. MYSORE: Vignesh Specialty Laboratory and Research Centre has introduced PCR test for diagnosis of Chikungunya. Resolution sought on border row

BANGALORE: Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha president Vatal Nagaraj has urged the Government to adopt a resolution condemning the Centre's stand in favour of Maharashtra on the border dispute and demanding the implementation of the Mahajan Commission report the legislature session in Belgaum next week.

The Chamarajanagar MLA told presspersons here on Wednesday that the Government should send a signal to the Maharashtra Government by adopting a resolution that reflected the State's stand on the border dispute.

He claimed that many organisations such as the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, two factions of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and the Karnataka State Government Employees Association had extended support to the proposed Karnataka bandh to be observed on October 4. — Staff Reporter

Exam on October 29 to recruit constables

BANGALORE: The State police will conduct a written examination to recruit candidates to 4,300 posts of police constable on October 29. The examination will be held in the offices of Superintendents of Police and Police Commissioners.

According to an official press release, there are two lakh applicants. The examination for the posts of civil constable will be held in the morning. Those who have applied for the posts of City Armed Reserve constable will write the examination in the evening. The answers will be put up on the website www.karnatakastate-police.org after the examination is over, the release said. — Staff Reporter

Applicants' names available on website

BANGALORE: The Forest Department has published the names of those who have applied for the posts of 125 foresters and 200 forest guards. It has also notified the names of those who have not given complete information.

The names are available on its website, www.karnataka-forestdepartment.org. They have also been put up on the notice-board in the office of the Deputy Conservator of Forests in each district.

Candidates who find mistake in the details published and those who have not given the required information should contact the department by October 19. — Staff Reporter

Minister invited for discussion on Tipu

Bangalore: Akhila Karnataka Mahamdeeyara Kannada Vedike has invited Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy to participate in an open discussion on Tipu Sultan.

Bruhath Lok Adalat settles 1,222 cases

Bangalore: A total of 1,222 cases were disposed of during the Bruhath Lok Adalat conducted on September 16. Among them, 977 cases had to do with dishonouring of cheques, 69 with land acquisition and 40 were motor vehicle cases. Karnataka High Court judge Subash B. Mahindra launches new vehicles

Bangalore: Mahindra & Mahindra on Thursday launched its Maxx Maxi truck and the Bolero Pik Up to boost its market share in the small cargo four-wheeler segment.

The company is looking at raising it market share from 33 per cent last year to 50 per cent this year in the small cargo four-wheeler segment, G. Seshadri, vice-president (Sales-Automotive Sector), told presspersons here.

The new variant with a cargo carrying capacity of 900 kg had been strategically placed in the segment between large three-wheelers and big pickups. It would create its own niche market, he said. — Special Correspondent
