Many die in storm

Haroon Habib

DHAKA: With the number of bodies recovered from the stormy Bay till Thursday rising to over 50, the severe cyclonic storm that swept over southern Bangladesh coast on Tuesday night may have claimed over 100 lives. Rescuers have failed to trace hundreds of missing fishermen. The storm is also believed to have killed a naval officer and many fishermen as around 500 fishing trawlers, boats and a naval ship capsized in the Bay. Rescuers recovered more than 50 bodies during their search till Thursday, local television channels reported. The disaster occurred as a sudden storm, under the influence of a depression, lashed the coastal belt at speeds of 100 kmph to 130 kmph and triggered waves as high as 40 feet. According to officials, most of the fishing trawlers sank off the coastal districts of Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Barisal, Patuakhali, Barguna and Bhola. Local authorities fear more casualties as the stormy weather is yet to subside.
