Death for failed woman bomber

Atul Aneja

DUBAI: A Jordanian court has sentenced to death the Iraqi woman who was part of a plot which led to the bombing of three Jordanian hotels last year.

Nearly 60 persons died in these attacks in the Jordanian capital, Amman. The woman, Sajida al-Rishawi, was an alleged suicide bomber but the explosives belt that she was wearing did not detonate. Her husband, Ali Hussein Ali al-Shamari, the other suicide bomber, however, triggered an explosion inside a wedding hall in the Radisson hotel, causing scores of casualties.

The Grand Hyatt hotel and the Days Inn hotel were also targeted on November 9, 2005.

The Jordanian police filmed Ms. Rishawi confessing her participation in the attack. However, during the trial, she pleaded not guilty and alleged that her confession had been taken under duress. However, the court ruled that Ms. Rishawi and the six others who were tried in absentia were guilty.
