Letters to the Editor
The indiscriminate police firing on traders protesting a drive by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to seal shops leading to the loss of four lives, including a seven-year-old, is shocking. What provoked police firing in the residential area? Did the police exhaust all other methods of crowd control? It is hoped the magisterial inquiry will uncover the happenings that led to the unfortunate incident.
V.G. Bijoy Philip,

Obviously the violence during the bandh was fuelled by vested interests. It brings to the fore the increasing disregard for the law. Union Urban Development Minister S. Jaipal Reddy has added fuel to the fire by saying the Government stands by the notification on mixed land use and commercial use and that the Constitution can be amended if necessary to frame a new law to end demolitions. It is unfortunate that vote-bank considerations are undermining the judiciary, an essential feature of a democracy.
