Letters to the Editor
The Centre's proposal to increase the cash incentive to Rs.50,000 in all the States to encourage inter-caste marriages is progressive. Such marriages are in the nation's interest as they play a crucial role in lessening caste feelings. Affirmative action to provide couples reservation in educational institutions, employment, and legislatures is worth considering.

Given the existing social milieu, one wonders whether inter-caste marriage can play a crucial role in mitigating caste feelings. Children born to parents of different castes adopt the father's caste in official records.
Thus only the bride's caste identity is eliminated. The very objective of establishing a casteless society gets defeated. Children from such marriages should be declared casteless and entitled to concessions in education and employment.
