Corrections and clarifications

The sentence in "Basking in the glory, deservedly" (Editorial, September 20, 2006) was: "The enviable generation of internal revenues has made it possible for the Railways to grow, within a five-year span, from being a defaulter in payment of dividend to the Centre to a substantial contributor — it paid Rs.13,612 crore last year and intends to pay Rs.20,000 crore this year." Vijayalakshmi Viswanathan, Financial Commissioner (retd.), Railways, says: "This is incorrect. Rs. 13,612 crore is the internal resource generation of the Indian Railways before dividend and also before contribution to the depreciation reserve fund. (This fund is meant for the replacement and renewal of assets.) The actual payment of dividend for 2005-06 was Rs. 3,668 crore. In 2006-07, the Budget has provided for Rs. 3,871 crore."

The editorial "Honourable exit" (September 15, 2006) said three rebel MLAs, Enos Ekka, Kamalesh Singh and Stephen Marandi, against whom disqualification petitions were pending, had voted for the Arjun Munda Government in the Assembly in 2005. This was not wholly correct, and Mr. Marandi did not vote for the Government. In June 2006, the Speaker had upheld Mr. Marandi's membership, dismissing a petition questioning his election as independent in February 2005, when he was a JMM member of the Rajya Sabha. In the latest disqualification moves, the charge against Mr. Marandi was that he had joined a political party, the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Democratic).

In "Blast at Mittal's mine" ("Briefly", September 21, 2006, page 1), it was stated that the mine, in Kazakhstan, belonged to Mittal Steel. It should have been Arcelor Mittal.

The UNI report "Jacques Kallis to seek Tendulkar's assistance ("Sport", September 21, 2006) stated that Kallis became the first player in ODI cricket to score 8,000 runs and take 200 wickets recently. A reader points out that Kallis is the second player to accomplish this feat, Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya being the first.

The heading ("HP marks 100 millionth printer sale") and the strapline ("Launches an entry level version in the Indian market") of the report on Hewlett Packard ("Business" page, September 21, 2006) were inaccurate. They should have been: "HP marks 100 millionth laser printer sale" and "Launches entry level multifunction version in the Indian market", as mentioned in the text. The errors were rectified in the Internet edition.

The sentence in "Direct selling units seeks realistic law" ("Business" page, September 20, 2006) was: "... the `immense potential' of the Rs. 3,100 crore direct selling industry could be tapped if a conductive environment, in which fly-by-night operators could not survive, was created." As a reader points out, it should have been "conducive".
