Bidar: New Trade Union Initiative (NTUI), a New Delhi-based federation of trade unions, conducted an awareness camp on the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) for village workers in Bidar on Wednesday. NTUI secretary Goutham Mody, who inaugurated the workshop, gave details of the Act and the schemes devised by the States under it. He urged the people to demand their rights under the Act and seek employment from panchayats and other local authorities.
Checking migration
He said NTUI was active in 14 districts in seven States where the Act was being implemented. The feedback was that works taken up under the Act were successful in stopping migration in most places, he said. He urged the State Governments to raise the wages of workers. District Unemployed Teachers Association president Sangamesh Nasigar, District Labour Union president M. Shiromani and union leader Suresh Patil were present. Job applications were later distributed to hundreds of labourers from around 50 villages.
