Collector inspects counting centres

TIRUNELVELI: The District Collector, G. Prakash, on Thursday, inspected the centres, in which the votes to be polled for the local body elections would be counted.

While votes polled in the corporation would be counted at Government College of Engineering, votes polled in Palayamkottai panchayat union would be counted at Schaffter Higher Secondary School on Swamy Nellaiyappar High Road. After inspecting the two centres, Mr. Prakash held discussions with the officials on the security arrangements to be made in these places.

The Collector also visited the designated counting centres at Tenkasi and Alangulam.

Helipad work apace RAMANATHAPURAM: The work on establishing a new helipad at Mandapam is on full swing, according to the District Revenue Officer, Dhandapani.

He said on Thursday that it was being laid following the advice of security persons, who inspected the existing helipad at Mandapam ahead of the President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's visit on Saturday. Mr. Dhandapani said barricades would be erected at the landing site to regulate the officials and public.

Fire services and ambulances would also be mobilised at Mandapam. — Staff Reporter

Shelters being repaired

PUDUKOTTAI: The Cyclone Shelters at Kattumavadi, Eruchi, Ponnagaram and Ambedkar Nagar were being repaired to accommodate the Sri Lankan refugees.

Power supply and drinking water supply were being provided.

More number of refugees were expected to reach the district from the Mandapam camp. The refugees would stay at the cyclone shelters for a few days till the houses at the Refugee camps are repaired, the sources said.

Local polls

PUDUKOTTAI: A total of 66,825 voters in Pudukottai municipality including 33,864 voters will exercise their franchise on October 13. According to an official source, a total of 88 booths would be set up in the municipality. Five booths have been identified as sensitive.

Panchayat Raj training

Tiruchi: A training programme for trainers of voluntary organisations on the provisions of the Panchayat Raj Act was conducted recently here under the auspices of the Federation for Voluntary Action.

The trainees were exposed to the election process.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 105.52 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Thursday. The inflow was 12,551 cusecs and the outflow 19,999 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Protection ordered for law college

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has orally directed the Salem district administration to provide police protection to the Salem Law College, the only private law college in the State, till Monday.

The First Bench comprising Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice K. Chandru gave the direction after counsel for the college informed the Bench that students were indulging in violent activities within the premises. When the matter was mentioned by counsel, the Bench wanted to know the action taken by the district administration. It was, however, informed in the afternoon that the agitating students had been removed from the campus. The hearing was then adjourned to Monday. — Special Correspondent

PDS rice seized

CHENNAI: Civil Supplies CID recently seized 10.5 tonnes of rice meant for public distribution system near Arampakkam check post near here.

According to an official press release, the consignment was seized when it was being transported to Andhra Pradesh in a jeep and a lorry. The police arrested three persons and seized the vehicles also. Total value of the rice and the vehicles was said to be Rs. 10 lakh. Cases were registered in this connection. — Special Correspondent

DMDK appoints poll panel

CHENNAI: Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) on Thursday appointed a five-member election committee under the chairmanship of Panruti S.Ramachandran for the by-election to the Madurai Central Assembly. The other members of the committee are R. Sunderarajan (party treasurer), Regina Pappa (State secretary of the women's wing), and K. Maya Thevar and S. Austin (former MPs). — Special Correspondent

Results on website

Chennai: Results of the M.Sc. Psychology examination conducted by the University of Madras, Institute of Distance Education, in May was published on Wednesday. The results were also available on the following websites: www.squarebrothers.com, www.southindia.com, www.webulagam,com, www.chennaidarling.com and www.chennaionline.com, an official release said.

The results could also be accessed through Airtel mobile by sending a short messaging service to 333.

The release said the statement of marks would be sent to candidates by speed post/registered post. Candidates who want to apply for revaluation of answer papers need to submit necessary forms to the institute before October 3 provided that it is his/her first attempt in the examination. The fee for revaluation of each paper is Rs. 650 and the fee for retotalling is Rs. 200, the release added. — Staff Reporter

No nominations filed yet

ERODE: Tiruchengode, Komarapalayam and Pallipalayam Municipalities, all of which go to election on October 13, are yet to receive nominations. After the announcement of local body elections by the State Election Commission, filing of nominations began on Wednesday. Officials in the local bodies attribute the lull in filing nominations to the waning lunar cycle. New moon day falls on Friday, and Saturday and Sunday being holidays, filing nominations is expected to gain momentum on Monday. - Staff Reporter

Handcuff recovered

ERODE: The police recovered a handcuff from a land at Appakudal on Wednesday evening. According to the police, Ayyasamy (22) of Appakudal, arrested in a rape case, escaped from the police station with handcuff. Superintendent of Police Sonal V. Misra suspended three head constables in this connection. On Wednesday evening, based on information given by a farmer, the police recovered the handcuff from Palakkattuthottam area. The police are further investigating and searching for Ayyasamy. - Staff Reporter

Farmers' rally

ERODE: Traffic between the Collectorate and Government Headquarters Hospital Junction was affected on Thursday noon because of the rally organised by the Tamil Nadu Agriculturists Association and Tamil Nadu Agricultural labourers Association. They demanded the Government grant two acres of land to all landless people and agricultural labourers. Earlier, they assembled near the Government Headquarters Hospital Junction, went in a procession to Collectorate. They were dispersed by the police after half-an-hour. - Staff Reporter

Monkeys caught

SANKAGIRI: A team of forest officials caught a herd of monkeys, which strayed into the residential areas, and left them safe in the forests.

According to official sources, more than 100 monkeys strayed into Varanallampalayam. On information from the residents, a team of forest officials rushed to the village and caught them and left them safe in the forests. - Staff Reporter

Free medical camp

SALEM: Democratic Youth Federation of India conducted a free medical camp for tribal people in Karumanthurai near Vazhapadi recently.

State secretary of the Federation S. Kannan inaugurated the camp.

A team of doctors from Deepam Hospital, Vazhapadi, led by K. Sureshkumar screened 377 men, 355 women and 113 children in the camp. - Staff Reporter
